My name is Rakiya (or raks) and I am a writer and director in short films, Adverts and occasional music. I have been embedded in the creative industry for over 6 years now, starting off in photography and videography and working around production for a deeper understanding. I have transitioned into Directing and Writing and building building a black women led production company. My mission is to introduce a new avenue of entertainment, by telling stories with a new lens, with a particular focus on re directing narratives in the film world. Removing harmful tropes of my identities along with representing underrepresented communites and challenging the sociological standpoint that mass media produce.
Question 1: Who would you say is someone pivotal to your journey so far?
Rashid Kasirye (founder of linkuptv) he has mentored me and taught me valuable lessons in the world of production that I apply today
Question 2: Who would be your ideal mentor, and why?
My Ideal mentor would be someone to aid me with the business of the film industry, I would love to gain clearer knowledge in production company ownership and funding application opportunities.
Question 3: What advice would you give the next Trailblazer looking to break into your field?
I would say, to pursue your passions the way you know how to do it. There are no rules of theory, don’t rely on a handbook. If it works and you are getting results, do not allow anyone to steer you away from that path.
